Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI; Hammer, 2011)

Description

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI; Hammer, 2008) is a 50-item self-assessment questionnaire that helps you understand how you currently think about cultural differences. It is based on Milton Bennett’s ((1986, 1993) Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS), which proposes six stages of development, from ethno-centric/monocultural to ethno-relative/multicultural ways of thinking. There are three ethnocentric stages, which are denial, defense and minimization of differences; and three ethno-relative stages, which are accepting differences, cognitive integration and ultimately behavioral integration. With each next stage, a person has a richer, more differentiated, appropriate and effective understanding of his or her own cultural background, and of the cultural background of others.
